Today we had the good fortune to meet with the staff at the Fort Myers Technical College to discuss awarding scholarship funds for the Empowerment Works MLK Corridor Reentry Technical Scholarship Program.

We received a lot of good feedback from the staff as we work towards awarding scholarships at Fort Myers Technical College to those who who live in the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Corridor in Fort Myers and are reentering society from the justice system.

We firmly believe that we can make a difference in our community and in the lives of these individuals by helping them find a career path that enables them to reenter society as productive members with a new career.  Finding a job that pays a living wage empowers those who are trying to change their circumstances to become productive members of our community and to avoid the high rates of recidivism that can hold them back from achieving their dreams.  The Fort Myers Technical College has a tremendous track record of providing the skills that empower individuals to achieve new careers.

We were especially pleased to hear statistics that about 80% of those who enter the technical college complete their training and about 80% of those who complete get a job in their field when they graduate.  That is a remarkable record especially when you consider that most career training programs only take a year to complete.

We thank those that contributed to our scholarship fundraising and want to let you know that we will be releasing funds to help change lives soon.  We are grateful for helping us to bring change to our community.
